** Choosing the RIGHT DJ**

Choosing the right DJ for your function is one of the most important decisions you can make to insure the success of your event. Even if everything else is perfect, without a good DJ your event is likely to fizzle before it begins. There are more than 15,000 DJs in the United States, all of whom will promise to do a great job. The purpose of this Blog is to help you be more be a little more informed.

The best way to find/hire a DJ you're certain to like, is to hire someone you've seen perform. If you can't remember his or her name, it shouldn't take too much scouting to find out who he or she was. If you didn't take a business card at the event, the person who put the event together (and invited you) will probably remember who he or she was. If that doesn't work then your host, hostess or the manager of the venue, where the party was held, should be able to pull that information.

If you haven't seen a good DJ recently – go social!! Ask friends, family, neighbors and/or people with whom you work.

If you have not seen a DJ you like and your social network can not offer suggestions, your job gets a little more difficult. It's time to hit the Internet!  Do some local internet research. Jot down the DJ's who's websites seem appealing, professional and have some personality. I'd say write down at least 10 companies. Then drill down a step deeper and find out the names of those DJ's..... and now for the good part.... GOOGLE the names you get in the local market like this: “Raleigh DJ Jim Unger”. You'll get pages and pages of references, referrals and valuable information! Believe me – if there are any bad seeds on that list you've created – this is the way to shake them loose!

Time to whittle down that list a little further....

The worst way to make your decision - is based on price alone. Some DJs are more expensive than others - and prices can range from $200 to $2500. The range can be huge and it can be tempting to choose the least expensive solution. Remember this.....there are good reasons why some DJs charge more than others. The more expensive DJ tend to be the more experienced ones. Their reputations and their availability allows them the well earned flexibility of charging more than their lesser known, less experienced, mostly available colleagues. DJ's on the low end of the price scale tend to be new to the business, trying to get established. If you elect to gamble on a less experienced DJ, there is the risk of error, glitches, sub-par equipment, cancelling on you at the last minute because they got a better paying gig and worst case scenario.....they don't show up at all!

Time to get a few on the phone....

When you speak with the DJ's, pay attention to their level of professionalism. Are they articulate? Do they seem genuinely interested in working with you or are they interested in your budget? Do they have references they can send you? Any DJ who hesitates to give you information about previous client interactions and performances should raise a RED FLAG for you. Get at least three to five names and phone numbers of people for whom the DJ has recently worked. Regardless of whether you call them or not – get them.

You've short listed to 2-3 now....

Now that you've fine tuned your list to perhaps 2-3 DJ's meet them and let them tell you about themselves. If you're  not satisfied with the DJ "schpeel" you get from them, keep them talking a bit more. Ask them about their experience with the type of event you're planning.  Ask about his or her equipment. You've done your research – you have the short list. At the end of the day you can now pick your favorite DJ based on the one you like the most! The planning phase should be almost as fun as the event itself. If you can't see yourself enjoying working with the DJ BEFORE your event in addition to him or her actually performing the event – you've got the wrong entertainer! Working with your top choice DJ should be fun from day one!!
I hope this helps a little!

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Celebration!

The Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah Ceremony in the Jewish faith, is a celebration of a thirteen-year-old boy or girl becoming a man or woman.  Bar mitzvah is the Hebrew phrase meaning "son of the commandment" and Bat mitzvah means "daughter of the commandment." Becoming a bar or bat mitzvah means that a boy or girl has become an adult, and is fully responsible for his or her morals and religious duties. It also means that he or she has become a full-fledged member of the Jewish community, and must follow the rules of Jewish life - the commandments. This is one of the most memorable events in the life of a special young person and their family. Due to the significance of this type of event, you do not want to place your faith in just any DJ company.

At Ninety Nine Entertainment, we are a DJ Company that spends a lot of time in planning a celebration as important as the bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah.  Your Ninety NineEntertainment mitzvah DJ will be happy to work with you  from the planning stage to the performance. Our goal is to help you achieve the ultimate experience for that special young person in your life.

The "Mitzvah" includes:

  • Unlimited one on one consultations, phone and email correspondence with your mitzvah DJ
  • An Online Planning Form to help you organize your party
  • An online Music Planner to help you personalize the music for your event
  • State of the art sound system
  • State of the art light show
  • A Master of Ceremonies to make announcements and help manage, direct and navigate the time and flow of your party. The Ninety NineEntertainment Mitzvah DJ will entertain you and your guests with fun music, games and audience participation activities to create an event you will never forget.

The Professional Wedding Guild Luncheon November 16th

I was pleased to attend my first Professional Wedding Guild luncheon this week at the Zakya Indian Restaurant in Raleigh.  The food was outstanding and authentic - it certainly won't be my last trip there!

The mission of the Professional Wedding Guild is to form a solid network of wedding service professionals to help promote your business to area brides and grooms. The gatherings are the perfect place to meet others in the wedding vendor field and to exchange ideas and information. The Perfect Wedding Guide proudly founded and sponsors the monthly networking luncheons in the Triad and Triangle Areas!

I was hopeful and yet somewhat skeptical about the value of the meet as I've been to many like this in the past and have always been slightly underwhelmed.....

I arrived, promptly, at 11am and was immediately introduced to over a dozen vendors from photographers, musicians, DJ's, wedding planners, floral professionals, ceremony officiants, wedding planners, catering directors from some of the areas top venues/hotels, and hair/makeup professionals.  The number of relevant wedding professionals grew to almost 30 through the course of the luncheon.  I was told that was a slower meeting as many times they approach 50 participants.

The presenter for the afternoon was Manju Nigam - owner of Blooming Buds Event Planner/Decorator.  Her specialty is traditional Middle Eastern weddings and events but she's well versed in US customs, decor and traditions as well.  she was educated at Cornell and opened the business in New York then moved the business to Raleigh.  Her topic of discussion was Indian Wedding traditions and celebration planning.  It was delightfully interesting and extremely informative!

I'm looking forward to the next PWG Triangle luncheon in January (we're skipping December).  If you're in the wedding industry, I'd encourage you to attend these luncheons.  I'm the newest full time member and am excited about the next event in January.

Thanks to Gail Galloway - Publisher of the Perfect Wedding Guide in NC as well as Jaime Gilliam for starting, maintaining and continuing to organize such a productive and informative luncheon each month!

The next event is:

January 25, 2012
Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott

The Bouquet Toss --> **Song Suggestions**

The Bouquet Toss is undoubtedly one of the most well known wedding traditions.  As a very experienced wedding DJ, I've seen a lot of them....  It can be a ton of fun and is also extremely unpredictable.  I've seen girls falling all over themselves to catch the bouquet, while other times they ran away at the speed of light!

By tradition, the bride stands with her back to the single ladies, and with the wedding DJ doing a countdown , the bride tosses the bouquet behind her.  The person lucky enough to catch it is said to be the next girl to be married.

Everyone seems to have some difficulty selecting the song for the bouquet because they’d like their reception to be different from everyone else’s – but there’s a certain expectation that goes along with the bouquet toss.   Selecting a song that only the bride and a few people know won’t have the same effect as a song that most will recognize.

Here are a few of the top requested songs for the Bouquet Toss (in no particular order):

  •  California Gurls- Katie Perry
  •  Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend- Marilyn Monroe
  • Girls Just Wanna Have Fun- Cindy Lauper
  •  Hey Ladies- Beastie Boys
  •  I Haven’t Met You Yet- Michael Buble'
  •  It’s Raining Men- Weather Girls
  •  Last Night- Keysha Cole Fea. P. Diddy
  •  Milkshake- Kelis
  •  Pretty Woman- Ray Orbison
  •  Say Hey (I Love You)- Michael Franti & Spearhead
  •  Single Ladies- Beyonce
  •  The Sign- Ace of Base
  •  What A Girl Wants- Christina Aguilera
  •  Wishin & Hopin- Ani DiFranco or Dusty Springfield
  •  American Woman - Lenny Kravitz
  • Another One Bites the Dust – Queen
  • Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
  • I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred
  • Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang
  • Just A Girl – No Doubt
  • Hit Me With Your Best Shot – Pat Benatar
  • Girls, Girls, Girls – Motley Crew

DJs - You GET What You Pay For!

A wedding is a once in a lifetime occasion - make sure that you have the right Wedding DJ and tools to make it spectacular!

I read this yesterday and felt it’s a prime example of DJs - you get what you pay for”.  This is the story as it’s written – typos an all….

From “holymitch” on theweddingzonecom….

HORRIBLE!!!! I MUST WARN ALL BRIDES TO STAY AWAY FROM THE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX! Their Dj XXXXXXXX completely ruined my wedding. I could not believe how awful, selfish, & lousy this dj was! All my guests truly felt bad for my husband & I yet, even still because this Dj was so cheap, we really got what we paid for (if i could go back in time, i would have just coughed off the money somehow & got a better dj!) & even still, we made the best of it-people still had fun bc luckily, we had to end up entertaining the guests! Here is the list of things that went on my wedding day wrong because of my dj:
1) I am very very particular about music, & i deeply love & appreciate music & wanted my different types of songs. I made an elaborate, detailed song/playlist for wedding for the dj to play. This fool DID NOT EVEN PLAY A QUARTER OF MY SONGS!!! I was truly devastated! he played songs that were not even on my playlist!!!!
2) i was promised a light show to create ambiance for my special wedding day. i met up with this dj several times in person & spoke to him countless times about the specifics of my wedding. I truly wanted special purple lighting along with state of the art lights which would literally reflect on the floor my name & my husband’s name. On the day before the wedding, I find out the dj suddenly has broken lights & does not bother to refund or repair the lights. I was very upset & aggravated because a friend of mine who also booked this dj experienced the exact same issue.
3) The dj’s microphones were horrible! Absoultely crappy! When my loved ones from my wedding party gave speeches, the micrphone kept making annoying, loud screeching sounds & the volume would go in & out. Sadly, this is occurred when I surprised my husband with a song dedicated to him. My guests including my husband could hardly hear me! I was truly disappointed & embarrassed! ;(
4)DJ XXXXXXXX DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO DJ! He claims he has like 15 years of experience but he does not know at all how to keep the crowd/guests entertained. For example, he just kept saying all night, “at this time, at this time!” & when my guests including myself confronted him about the music, he completely ignored my requests. In addiiton, Dj XXXXXXXX did not even know how to direct the tables when it was time to eat dinner. The guests were scattered & ended up waiting in line anyway & the priority tables were called last to eat! :(
5) I worked extremely hard on a wedding slideshow for the wedding. I am not joking it took me more than 8 hours to make this slideshow. On the day of the wedding, the dj does not have the proper equipment to play my slideshow. Again, I did not receive a refund!

BRIDES & GROOM PLEASE MAKE SURE WHO YOU BOOK AS A WEDDING DJ! MAKE SURE YOUR VENDOR IS A PROFESSIONAL DJ & TRULY CARING ABOUT YOUR NEEDS! MAKE SURE YOUR VENDOR GETS BACK TO YOU WHEN YOU NEED SOMETHING (DJ WAS ALWAYS LATE IN RETURNING MY CALLS OR EVEN NEGLECTED REQUESTS) GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE & I HOPE & PRAY YOU DO NOT ENDURE THE SAME ISSUES THAT I HAD!

Love it!!

Common Misconception - Anyone Can Be a DJ!!

The biggest misconception that I’ve noticed in the industry in which I work is that anyone with a computer or an iPod thinks they can be a Disc Jockey.   I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a couple say to me “a friend of mine is going to play music for us”.  As a professional DJ let me assure you that there should be a lot more involved in the decision making process than just choosing someone who can play music for you.   ANYONE can play music through a speaker.  It’s the knowledge and experience as well as how they handle their clients and guests that set them apart…oh yeah…there’s the gear too!

Here’s the list of benefits (and value-adds) of having a professional DJ at your event:
·
*   *   *    Years of music knowledge – and the music library to back up the knowledge
·       *  Years of experience managing and energizing live crowds including the ability to “read the crowd” to fine tune the music selection through the course of the evening
·       *  Years experience with last minute changes/adjustments/additions to the program
·       *  The confidence that comes along with all of the aforementioned experience and knowledge
·       *  The time, interest and organizational abilities to meet with and assist the brides or event coordinators in the planning of the party pulling from years of experience
·       *  The list of preferred vendors with which your Disc Jockey has worked - can be an extremely helpful
·       *  The personality it takes to be someone with whom people enjoy working
·       *  The technology required to aid and assist the planners in their thought processes of putting together the activities and timelines for their events – planning forms, etc
·       *  The commitment to stay on top of the market regarding music, equipment and procedures
·       *  Professional quality sound and lighting equipment
·       *  The commitment to set up early, sound check in plenty of time to be ready to roll EARLY if the guests arrive prior to the agreed upon time – as well as breaking down afterwards
·       *  Prepared to step into the “day-of” event coordinator role if there’s not one already established to keep the event running as smoothly and worry-free as possible
·       *  The expertise and polish to be able to emcee for the event maintaining the energy and credibility necessary to connect, manage, inform and energize throughout the entire event

The next time someone you know asks how they save money on their event.  Assure them that having a “friend with an Ipod” be their disc jockey and master of ceremonies is going to end in heartache and disappointment.  Offer that they perhaps scale back the caviar on the buffet line – but getting a professional DJ should never be in question.

NinetyNine Entertainment is a DJ company offering music and entertainment services to all of North Carolina as well as the South Carolina coast.

Interesting Statistics on Weddings

I ran across this article recently involving some interesting statistics on weddings in the US.  We all know that each market is drastically different from one another - but it's a good read nonetheless....enjoy!

Interesting Statistics on Weddings in the United States - National Averages

• 2.3 million couples wed every year in the US. That breaks down to nearly 6,200 weddings a day
• the average age of a bride in the US is 25.3
• average age of a groom is 26.9
• average number of guests invited to a wedding is 178
• one-third of those getting married each year have been married before

The money behind the marriage
• $72 billion per year is spent on weddings
• the average wedding budget is $20,000
• $1,016 is the average cost of wedding rings for the bride and groom
• traditionally, the father of the bride would pay for everything. Today, however, the bride and groom themselves pay for the wedding about 30 percent of the time; the bride's parents pay about 17 percent of the time. As for the rest of the time, costs are covered by different sources -- the bride and groom and one or both sets of parents, according to surveys by Bride's magazine.
• $19 billion per year is spent on wedding gift registries
• $8 billion per year is spent on honeymoons
• the average honeymoon budget is $3,657
• over  91 percent of all to-be-weds register for gifts. The couple receives gifts from an average of 200 guests
• most wedding guests spend between $70 and $100 on a gift

August 10.2%
September 9.6%
October 9.4%
November 7.4%
December 7.8%

Where do weddings take place?

80 percent of weddings are performed in churches or synagogues

Honeymoons

• 99 percent of newlyweds take a honeymoon
• the average couple will spend three times more on their honeymoon than a regular vacation
• 40 percent of honeymooners will travel within the United States, about 60 percent will travel to a foreign country
• honeymoons usually last 7 to 9 days
• the most popular destinations are Las Vegas, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and
Jamaica
35 percent of brides and grooms have a valid passport

Other Interesting Info
the top wedding city in the world is Istanbul, Turkey with 166,000 for the year
• Las Vegas, Nevada is in second place with 114,000 weddings.

The History of the Club DJ

I recently read an article on the history of DJ's and found it be quite interesting.  Here's an excerpt:

"The Pre-DJ History Period (1877-1943)
Thomas Edison invents the phonograph in 1877 and the history of recorded sound begins. While one can argue that Reginald A. Fessenden became the first "Broadcast" DJ by broadcasting Christmas music in 1906 near Boston, Massachusetts, the first "Club DJ" didn't emerge until 1943. In fact, the first Club DJ's weren't humans. A popular dance in the early-1900's called "juking" resulted in the popularity of coin-operated jukeboxes (invented in 1889). A "juke-joint" became known as a place for dancing/drinking to jukebox music during the 1920's.
The World's First DJ Dance Party (1943-1969)
Jimmy Savile launched the world's first DJ dance party in 1943 by playing jazz in the upstairs function room of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherd's in Otley, England. Savile saw 210 people attend his first night. As Savile was breaking ground in the UK, we begin to see clubs opening in France and other parts of Europe immediately after World War II. Many of these discotheques (French word for record library) either couldn't afford live bands or wanted authentic American music. Thus, they relied on records to entertain their clientele. According to Dick Clark, "the first disco was probably a little dive that couldn't afford a band." However, some DJ historians believe that the first disco was the "Whiskey-A-Go-Go" in Paris (1947)."

Music: Wedding Ceremonies - What's the "Right Way"?

Everyone knows what's supposed to happen and what's supposed to be played at wedding ceremonies - right?

Traditional Ceremonies:

*  30 minutes prior to the ceremony your Raleigh DJ is playing some traditional classical music
*  The ceremony begins with the seating of the mothers and grandmothers with something playing like "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"
*  The Officiant, the groom, the groomsmen, the bridesmaids, flower girl(s) and ring bearer enter the room to "Canon in D"
*  The bride enters the room and slowly makes her way to the alter to "Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin"
*  ...and now for the very first time as husband & wife, I introduce to you Mr & Mrs......followed by something like the "Hallelujah Chorus (from the Messiah)" as the couple leaves the church

That would be a beautiful wedding ceremony to be sure, however, it doesn't have to be that way if that doesn't reflect who you are!

I've provided DJ Services for countless wedding ceremonies and have been equally as moved with non-traditional music selections as I have been with traditional.  In fact, sometimes it can make the day more special if the music is customized to fit who you are.

A few examples of what I've seen are:

*  A full on blues/rock wedding ceremony with Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Pride and Joy" as the bride walks down the isle
* A complete 80's wedding ceremony with Berlin's "Take my Breath Away" as the bride walks down the isle

The most important thing to remember is....there's no wrong or right way to do it - there's only YOUR WAY!

Enjoy the day....and make it your own!

Halloween Dance Party!

Ninety Nine Entertainment, a Raleigh DJ Company, was the host for one of the area's most lively 7th grade Halloween Parties on Saturday night - October 29th!  Not only did DJ & Owner Jim Unger pull out the high octane sound equipment, but packed a punch with some lighting as well.  The guests began arriving at 6:30pm and by 7pm the dance floor was rocking!  Between dance sets we pulled out the Wii for a 4 round Ultimate "Just Dance" Competition.  Big fun was had by all including the "Mad Hatter" - Raleigh DJ Jim Unger!!
The town of Cary will never be the same!
